The Season of JOY

December was dedicated to identifying the needs in our community and researching organizations that take steps in addressing those needs.  The students identified the following as critical needs in our community (in no particular order):  crime, violence/abuse, hunger, homelessness, alcohol/drug abuse, teen pregnancy, teen suicide, physical/mental handicaps, and racism.  After their research they decided to send the following organizations an RFP for the $1000 JOY grants:  Bath Youth Meetinghouse and Skatepark, Planned Parenthood, WIC, Elmhurst, Youth Move Maine, Maine Suicide Prevention, CASA, Tedford Shelter, Project Aware, CHANS Hospice, Habitat for Humanity/7 Rivers, Addiction Resource Center, SASSMM, New Hope for Women, Seeds of Independence, and the Bath Mobile Food Truck.  For more information on JOY go to www.jumpstartouryouth.org.

Careers in Communication

Matt Wickenheiser of Bath Iron Works spoke to two of the multi-year classes about careers in communication and how to interview subjects for a story.  He offered the students valuable guidance in how to build rapport with a subject to get at the heart of a story.  His instruction in interviewing is preparing the students for an assignment on local philanthropists.

News from the Morning Senior Class

"In JMG we have been working on our E-portfolios. We've done a personality test and the Holland Code test to better help us figure out what job would be good for us. To my astonishment, the tests were actually really helpful and accurate. All the research we've been doing has really helped me to decide what I want to go to college for, and get a degree in. Over all, this project in JMG has really helped me and I bet I'm not the only one who thinks so!" -Kayla

Students Help with PFL Annual Appeal

Today the MY 3 and 4 classes processed a 700 piece mailing for the Patten Free Library. Your efforts will benefit the library immensely with their annual appeal.

Young Entrepreneur Academy

Thank you to Robin Whorff of the Mid Coast Maine Chamber of Commerce for speaking to the JMG students about the Young Entrepreneur Academy starting later this month.

Officer Raedel Comes to JMG

SRO Raedel was a student in JMG during period 5 today.  He participated in an experiential activity that demonstrates the importance of creating plans and following through with them to reach your goals.
